Your child walks in one day and says he wants to play lacrosse. Fine. But what IS lacrosse? Lacrosse is an outdoor sport that involves a lot of running. A lacrosse field is roughly the size of a football field.

Lacrosse plays like a combination of basketball, hockey and football. Each player uses a stick with a net at one end to handle the ball. Goals are scored by throwing the ball past the goalie into the opposing team's net.

Outdoor lacrosse is a spring sport. The men's scholastic season concludes around the end of May. The rest of the year, there are profit-making programs. This being Michigan, however, the winter programs are played indoors.

Lacrosse is a safe sport, but players DO run into one another. Bumps, bruises and sprains are to be expected. More-serious injuries are uncommon. The worst injuries you are likely to see are knee injuries. These are most common among people who play football in the fall and lacrosse in the spring.

Most lacrosse programs around here (certainly the Birmingham program) acknowledge that they are secondary to academics -- Few people go on to fame and wealth because of lacrosse.
